about OFF THE RECORD
Liz Dougherty has no idea that a single question is about to change her life.
Her first big reporting assignment for her North Carolina college newspaper has her covering a state senator’s impromptu press conference. Brady Maxwell may have everything it takes to be a politician—a winning pedigree, devastating good looks, a body made to wear suits—but his politics rub Liz the wrong way. When Liz’s hard-hitting question catches the upstart senator off-guard, it impresses Hayden Lane, Liz’s editor who feels she’s headed for a promising career as a reporter.
But Liz is also headed into a secret romance with Brady that could destroy both their ambitions. Though he’s a bachelor, potential voters might frown on Brady cozying up to a reporter. And Liz isn’t sure sneaking around is enough for her—especially when things between her and Hayden might be less platonic than she thought.
I hate political genres. Why have I never read a political romance before!??
Secrets. Forbidden Love. Angst. Sexual Tension. = Never a disappointment.
Liz Dougherty is a journalism student working her way towards her career. Motivated, driven and not willing to fail, she’s tasked with covering the political beat for her college newspaper. Better yet, she’s partnered up with her editor and two year crush, Hayden Lane. Their assignment: State Senator Brady Maxwell. Liz doesn’t agree with Maxwell’s politics, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t ready for the challenge.
Except when Senator Brady Maxwell has other things in mind. Like buying Liz a drink.
Offering COMMANDING her to call him. Starting a secret relationship. Leaving her hot and cold. Bringing other dates to events. Giving her a key to his home. Confessing his love. Making it clear his first choice is his campaign, always. Seducing her in the most delicious ways possible.
“A sitting State Senator had bought her a drink. This was not real life. This didn’t happen to her. Hadn’t she just insulted him in front of a roomful of people?”
Brady and Liz are definitely hot together. HOTT. The physical chemistry between them is intense and left my toes curling. BUT, it was hard to get a read on whether or not Brady was truly developing feelings or if this is a bad case of stringing a girl along for the ride. The story is told in Liz’s POV (minus the final chapter). Physically, Brady wanted her–bad. But he kept his feelings covered up through most of the story and instead of making declarations of love, made clear that she wasn’t his priority during his campaign.
“I’ll be up-front with you. I might hurt you. You’re going in knowing that. I’m choosing the campaign. I’m choosing Congress, because it’s what I want and what I believe in. Nothing, no one is getting in the way of me and the House of Representatives.”
On the other hand, I found myself growing to love Hayden and his naturally shy character. You could tell that even though he himself was conflicted with a school/work relationship, he cared for Liz in a “heart on his sleeve” sort of way. And as your reading this review, yes, I suppose it was a love triangle in some aspects. But it was more of a Liz trying to find her way in what she wanted triangle. Brady representing a passionate, yet secret, love and Hayden representing the possibility of a normal relationship, one without a spotlight. One where she could openly be with someone, enjoying the company without looking over her shoulder at every turn.
Cliffhanger? Not really, more of an unresolved solution of how to move forward. As the book is part of a series, I think it left it at the perfect place to pick up the next installation and find out what happens. Will Brady give up love for his political career? Will Liz learn to live with being in the shadows for more years as Brady lives his dream? Will Hayden discover that maybe Liz just isn’t that into him?
This was my first book by K.A. Linde and it certainly won’t be my last. She does a great job hooking in a reader and leaving them salivating at each page turn. I’ve heard great things about the The Avoiding Series Boxset and I plan to start those after finishing with this series. Because OBVIOUSLY I must know what happens to Liz and Brady.
